The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is renewing its commitment to beginning farmers and ranchers with accessible farm ownership and operating loans through the Farm Service Agency (FSA). These loans are designed for those who are unable to obtain traditional commercial credit, offering critical support to help launch and sustain agricultural operations.
To qualify as a beginning farmer or rancher, applicants must have less than 10 years of farm management experience and meet specific eligibility criteria. FSA offers both direct loans, provided by the agency itself, and guaranteed loans, made by commercial lenders and backed by the USDA.
Funds can be used for a variety of needs, including purchasing land or livestock, upgrading infrastructure, acquiring farm equipment, or covering operational expenses. Direct ownership loans may span up to 40 years, while operating loans range from one to seven years.
For more information, visit farmers.gov or contact your local FSA office.
