Funding Will Enhance Access to Reliable Energy, Clean Drinking Water, and Economic Opportunities Across 44 States

WASHINGTON, Dec. 10, 2024 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced a landmark investment of $6.3 billion in rural and Tribal communities across 44 states. This funding aims to modernize infrastructure, expand access to reliable electric grids and safe drinking water, and create well-paying jobs to strengthen rural economies.

USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack said that “by building modern, resilient infrastructure, we’re attracting employers to small towns and remote communities, creating jobs, revitalizing Main Streets, and fostering lasting economic growth.”

Over 200 projects will benefit from this initiative, supporting the nation’s infrastructure and driving economic development from the middle out and the bottom up.

Expanding Clean, Reliable Energy Access

The USDA is dedicating $5.7 billion through the Electric Infrastructure Loan and Loan Guarantee Program to assist utility providers and electric cooperatives in building and upgrading electric infrastructure and smart-grid technologies in 23 states. These advancements will ensure rural communities have dependable electricity, unlocking economic opportunities and enhancing quality of life.

 Improving Rural Water Systems

An additional $642 million is being invested to improve access to clean drinking water, sanitary waste disposal, and stormwater management in 41 states. These funds, distributed through the Water and Waste Disposal Loans and Grants Program and the Solid Waste Management Grants Program, will empower state and local governments, private nonprofits, and federally recognized Tribes to develop or upgrade critical water infrastructure.

These strategic investments reflect the USDA’s commitment to building a stronger, more sustainable future for rural America.
